Christmas Traditons- Foods From the Generations!
I heard something I wanted to share, "we only miss the traditional holiday foods once they are no longer being served." Think about that-- most of us don't realize how important some of the foods we serve for the holidays are, we take it for granted until the person who made them is not longer part of our family. Only then it is too late to get those recipes. We miss things that are gone and sadly when they are gone, they are gone forever.
As we gather around with our family and friends this Christmas think about all the foods you ate growing up at Christmas. Are all those foods being served today? Are they missing since Grandma or Grandpa is no longer there? Were those food part of their culture or just their favorite food? Is there a reason to bring them back next year into the celebration.
Most often Christmas is a celebration of family and family traditions. We can see that heritage in the foods served. From the Christmas Eve dinner, often of fish or if you are Italian, it could be seven fishes, to Brunch serve Christmas Day topped off with Christmas Dinner. Our heritage oozes out all over the plates and it is those practices that keep us connected with past generations of our family. It also connects with the future generations of the family still playing with the presents that Santa left.
So as your family comes together this year think about your heritage and traditions, celebrate that in the melting pot we call America because we all are from somewhere and we celebrate it in the foods we eat. Even if you are miles away and with your friends you can see what food you bring are part of your own up bringing.
I wish you all go eating and peace throughout the season. Merry Christmas!
