Generations Of Women Standing in My Kitchen

It is Jewish New Year. The year is 5771 so it has been celebrated for many generations in my family. So as I cooked the meal to be shared by my family, I knew that I was standing on the shoulders of many women in my family that have been there before. These recipes have passed from mother to daughter over and over again. Each women shared the duties with their daughters and those recipes were never written down but learned.

I made the traditional plum cake that is always served along with honey cake. My family is too small to have two deserts so I passed on the honey cake. I served the round raisin challah, apple and honey with a nice red wine to say the traditional blessing said to celebrate the New Year. I made the traditional matzoh ball soup to be served for the first course.

Then I needed to shake things up and make some things that were different. I needed to break tradition. My main course was short ribs done as sweet and sour brazing. I know the generations of butchers in my family would have said why would you celebrate with such a cheap cut of meat,They have not seen the prices for that cheap cut of meat in the stores of today.

I was happy to keep the traditional foods as part of the menu and add just a little different. The meal was delightful. The spirit and circle of all those women in my family were there cooking with me and I felt blessed.

I wish you all a Happy New Year even if you are not Jewish. The traditional sayings is to wish a sweet year and a healthy new year so who would not like that wish.
