Making More Than Apple Sauce
My apples are hanging from my tree in my garden. I have been always told to wait for the first frost before picking them. The story goes that the frost turns on the sugars. I am not sure that is correct but I follow that rule. It gives the birds and the squirrels some apples in the mean time. I am eagerly waiting for that first frost so I can pick my apples. My tree is very young replacing a tree that gave a bushel of apples at the end of its life cycle.
Since I had a bushel of apples I started to make my own apple sauce. Now with my few apples I have I will make a pie. I just discovered that my own mother very often makes her own apple sauce. I should have known but while I was growing up she worked and did not have time for that so Mott's was just good enough for us. We ate the chunky style and when I make sauce I make it a bit chunky.
Making apple sauce is a great family chore and I use the word chore lovingly. You need to pick the apples. There are numerous orchards where you can go if you do not have a tree in your own yard. You can pick them and take them home or you can just go for a ride in the country to see the leaves change pick up a bag. It is great for eating local.
Once home, the apples need to peeled, cored and chopped up for your sauce. Or once peeled and cored, you can slice them for an apple pie. I am not going to share my recipe with you but there are hundreds on the web. Searching for that recipe can be part of the family project. If you are only going to make one sauce pan of apple sauce I do not think you need to buy canning jars but if you are like me and you decide to buy different kinds of apples you need to get the jars. I make apple butter and apple sauce. The jars will need to be prepped for filling.
This is much more than a family outing or family project. It is also a great way for the family to create new memories. It is a great way to have several generations in the kitchen creating some thing more than just apple sauce. It is the foundation of every family cookbook.
