Bookclub Meal Takes On Family Recipe

Book club met at my home last night. Our group is known for eating as well as reading. The rules are everyone brings a course and the person who hosts the evening does the entrée. The biggie is that everything must be vegetarian since we have a few members that keep kosher and a member that is a vegetarian. I find it a challenge to create something different the meals but I love a challenge.

Last night I made a cold summer cherry soup which was something my mother made when I was growing up. Mom would use any fruit that was past it prime but her favorite was cherry. This is different from Scandinavian cold soup which maybe a Minnesota a favorite with all the Scandinavians here. I called my mother last week and asked for her recipe. She was very excited that I had asked her about one of her recipes and I followed her instructions to the tee and I think most of the guest really liked it. My sister had warned me that they might not like it. Eric will not eat it so this was one of those times where if I wanted to make an heirloom recipe I needed to make for company. The hardest part of making the soup is pitting the cherries but if you find a good movie before you know it they are all pitted.

You have to make it the night ahead before you are going to serve it since it needs to sit in fridge to get cold. So it makes it perfect first course when you are having company. One thing to check off your list to do that day.
