Passover Recipes
I am amazed that the stores that sell Passover foods start stocking the shelves two months early. When I was growing up I was always told that you couldn't bring anything for Passover home until the house cleaned of all hometz. (bread and non passover food) You could clean a closet and put the stuff in there until the house had its spring cleaning.I think Jews were the original spring cleaning buffs since the house had to be cleaned each spring for Passover. And we are talking really clean! So why do the stores put the stuff on the shelves early? It is warehousing. They purchase this food and then put on the shelves so they do not need to put it anywhere else.
I went and bought my Passover food this weekend and was also surprised to see every kosher product amongst the Passover items. Egg noodles are not a passover item and yet there they were. I am now feeling better after my rant. My cooking magazines also have a problem publishing Passover recipes when it is time for Passover. Even the newspaper are out two weeks. It is not that they do not know when Passover is since it is always the same week as Easter.
This year I went thru all the magazines and looked for recipes that were of interest so I included the ingredients on my shopping trip. But this year I have also fallen in love with Bon Appetite's website that has list everything you ever wanted to know about Passover recipes. http://www.bonappetit.com/dishes/guides/passover/index/index_20090303
I found a recipes for matzah balls that used club soda. My grandmother would be turning over in her grave. But I asked my sister if she had ever tried it and she said yes but it really didn't make that much of a difference. She also warned me that using vodka was a no no since most of them use grain and not potatoes for their vodka. Potatoes are okay grain is not! But what I like about the website is the various dishes that I can serve the other 6 days besides for the sedar. I am fascinated that the Rabbi's had decided that quinno is okay since it is a grass and they have never said that wild rice is okay, since it too is a grass. I guess I will have to make that decision or talk to a Rabbi.
As I get ready to bake my Passover dishes I want to wish everyone a happy holiday. Just remember it is this time of year we dust off those family recipes and bring those memories to the table once again. That is why you should start your family cookbook now while the recipes are out and you are having your family gathering around the table!
