New Goals for this Year

Have you broken all your new years resolutions? Why not start all over with goals for this year. Mine would be to save some money, improve my health and help the planet. I think these are doable goals and would not be upset if you took them on for yourself.
My soapbox has been about eating locally and this continues on the same vain. Fresh local foods when they are in season are the best for taste and our planet. Winter in the midwest makes it more a theory than task unless...
My friend Cindy is already planning next years garden and she is eating the fruits of last years labors. She started a garden for the first time this year and was so surprised how much grew that she started canning. She gets to eat locally all winter long. It is so local it was grown outside her door. No trucks were used in hauling. No laborers were used to heavesting. She is saving money on all she grew and her grocery bills are in half than they were last winter. Not all of us can be in this positon but we can try to plan our gardens for this spring. Even thinking about spring can be healthy in this cold weather.
Lastly, cooking at home is more healthy for your family. You know exactly what was used in the growing process and what was used to create great flavors of each dish. No extra salt, not bad fats and only good stuff. You are not driving around to all those restuarant using gas and saving time even though you cooked.
These are some great thoughts on a snowy day and goals that we all can try to achieve. It does not mean every meal should be at your dinner table or those sweet bing cherries from Chile should not be purchased but to realize what decisions your are making with those choices. And choosing to make more better choices to be healthier, eat locally and save money.
