Traditional Foods Served at a Restaurant

Today I met some of my friends for Dim Sum. It was great fun to eat all those different foods. As I waited for new dishes to be presented to us, I noticed that most of the round tables were filled with Chinese families, varying in age, which meant several generations were eating these traditional foods.
First I wondered what brought all these people to Minnesota in the first place.
Then I wondered if these families come to these Chinese restaurants to keep the traditional foods all part of their families. Since there are so many different appetizers in this breakfast tea, it might be a daunting task to make at home. I had to ponder if the kids eat hamburgers and peanut butter jelly sandwiches during the week but once in a while the whole family comes out to a Chinese Restaurant to get there fix of traditional foods. Or if the eat  Chinese foods cooked in a wok most days but when they get to school want to eat the peanut butter sandwich.
As you know being raised in a household where my parents were German, we ate like any other family did in Germany. It was at school that I could try to be like everyone else. My mother never sent me to school with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I was more likely to have butter and jelly sandwich or a cheese sandwich. That could also explain why I worked in the kitchen in primary school to get a free school  lunch. Yes,I was a kid that was excited by school lunches. Macaroni and cheese or bar-b-que were some of my favorites. There I was an American. I just have to wonder if these Chinese children feel the same way!
As you know I hope that they are writing down their traditional recipes for a cookbook so that recipes that have been served for thousand of years in their ancestors homes will not be lost. Remember it only takes a generation. The foods we eat really say a lot about the culture where our families come from. I love that America is a true melting pot and each of us adds a bit of different flavor to make us great.
