Recipe for Great Holiday Season
As I was riding my stationary bike this morning and watching the Today Show there was a segment on making gifts with foods from cranberries, potatoes and even carrots. The idea was to buy in bulk to save even more money. ttp://www.yankeemagazine.com/food/index.php
As the conversation went this morning, the holidays are about creating memories. It really is not about the gifts. If I were going to give you ideas for creating your own Christmas gifts the number one item on the list would be A Plate Full of Memories to create a memory cookbook. It is perfect to give your parent so that they can get all the recipes to put into a book for you and your family. It is also perfect for a project the entire family can do during the holidays, collecting the recipes, collecting the stories and of course the photograph. As with any cookbook the recipes need to tested and what a great time in the kitchen you all can have.
But there are very many different kits out there to buy and create your own gifts. Whether you make your own soap, candles and candies it is the process and love that you put into making the gifts for friends and family. A few years ago I made marzipan fruit plate. I went to Goodwill and bought some decorative plates for a dollar each and then made the marzipan and decorated it with food coloring and a paintbrush. I then used colored plastic wrap and made a nice bow. Everyone loved it.
If pick blueberries or any other fruit you can make a gift of your jams and jellies. I have in the past picked the herbs from my summer garden and given flavored oils and vinegars as part of a gift basket. I just saw an article about giving flavored drinks in decorative bottles. But a word to the wise about giving a basket, after purchasing a nice basket and decorative grass and other things to fill you basket you maybe spending in excess of $100, I know since I made this mistake a few years a go. Just wrap each item nicely and don’t worry about the basket. Your pocket book will thank you for it!
You might want to make digi-scrapping which is digital scrapbooking. All you need is a computer, a printer and an image editor. Embellishments can downloaded to your computer. You can scan photos and write a bit of text. Walla, there you go and those are the same elements that can be used for your computer.
How about going through your house and looking at all the heirlooms you have gathered from your relatives. The best time to pass them on is when you are able to see the next generation using them rather than waiting until you have passed on. It does not need to be big or expensive, just something that holds a lot of meaning. If you are not ready to give your things away you might want to document them with the Our Family Heirlooms...and their stories book that you can purchase from www.recollections.info then give the books as gifts so that your family will know about the history of the things they will inherit some day.
Giving gifts that have meaning have lots of love attached to them and the recipient will cherish them for a long time. In tough economic times we can create these memorable gifts if we plan ahead. Now is the perfect time to start.

For those of you who are crafters and always find you have odds and ends left over it's a great start for holiday gifts. Last year I made scarfs for everyone with left over yarn that from earlier projects. They got great gifts and I got rid of extra yarn.
