Tomatoes, the signs of summer's end

I was at the pet food store yesterday and they had a cart full of tomatoes that they were giving to their customers since their garden was so plentiful. So last night at book club I brought tomatoes with fresh basil from my garden since my responsibility was the salad course. (it is the only thing I can grow without the rabbits and squirrels tasting...another story for another time)  Last weekend listening to the Splendid Table with Lynne Rosetta Kasper I was surprised to hear her talking about making tomato jam splendidtable.publicradio.org/. Then this weekend the New York Times had an article about tomato preserves. I then stated to think what kind of rock I had been living under since I had never heard of this use for tomatoes. I know that people make their own tomato sauce or tomato paste but these recipes were nothing like that.  Have any of you heard about this? The New York Times  stated that they had run this recipe in 1948 which was scented with lemon, cloves, cinnamon and ginger. And the roots go back to the 18th century. Sounds intriguing.... they even had an updated recipe.
