Capturing Cultural with Your Cookbook
One of the reasons that is top of mind when thinking about starting a cookbook is to capture the flavors of your family's traditions. One of the principal thoughts has always been that it connects you with your heritage. And one way of keeping tradition for your family is with foods. But I recently read an article about how some foods are added to our cultural at large and those recipes become main stream. And once that happens the recipes become totally different from the traditional recipe.
When I was a small child the terms people sometimes used for eating were Italian Pizza, Chinese Egg Rolls or Kosher Hot Dogs. Now we call it just pizza, egg rolls and all beef hot dogs. The mainstream culture has adopted these foreign foods as part of its diet. That is the easy part. We know that our diet and food choices have changed over time. But what about those original recipes from the old country? So let say your family is English, did the English food change and adapt over time? Therefore the English recipe that your are putting into your cookbook really could have started out as Scandinavian. Food for thought...
Also think about this when you make your dessert egg rolls or fruit summer pizza that your are just building upon the availiblity to foods from around the world in your local grocery store.
