More on Kids in the Kitchen

While we are on the subject of kids in the kitchen, I thought I would share a story that I tell when I speak on cookbook writing.
A few years back I was up at our lake place with some of our friends and the rules at the lake are everyone helps at meal time. We do not have a dishwasher there. There is no microwave. When we bought the place 27 years ago part of the bath was on the front porch. I am trying to set the stage for you so you understand it is a small place and very simple.
We assigned jobs to all the visitors and Marie, my girlfriends daughter, got the dishes. She was fine with assignment until after dinner she saw all the dishes and pots and pans piled everywhere. Well the two of us started on all those dishes, Marie washing and I was drying so I could put the things away. Marie was great. We talked about school and the sports in which she was involved. We talked about the news that day. We talked about the news of the day and we talked about the problems around the world and how to solve them. Before you knew it, all the dishes had been washed and put away. Maire turnaround and asked her mother, " Can we do dishes sometimes at home?" Maire had loaded dishes in the dishwasher, but not so much. With all the technology in our homes we lost a bit of community when we "did dishes."
